چکیده
Abstract Icy grains in the interstellar medium and star formation regions consist of a variety materials. Such composite interact differently with cosmic-ray (CR) particles compared to simple single-material grains. We aim calculate spectra energies temperatures mixed-composition undergoing whole-grain heating by CRs. The were assumed mixture carbon olivine, covered ices consisting oxides water. energy temperature for radii 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 μ m impacted CRs calculated eight values column density, relevant molecular clouds star-forming cores. approach takes into account changes ice thickness composition increasing density. These detailed data CR interaction are intended applications astrochemical models. main finding is that more accurate on grain heat capacity other factors prevent frequent 0.1 or larger icy high temperatures.

Temperature fluctuations of interstellar dust grains
The temperatures of interstellar dust grains are analyzed using stochastic simulations, taking into account the grain composition and size and the discreteness of the photon flux. Grains of radii smaller than about 0.02 μm are found to exhibit large temperature fluctuations with narrow spikes following the absorption of UV photons. The temperatures of such grains may rise by a few × 10 K for ve...
متن کاملEnergetic Processing of Interstellar Silicate Grains by Cosmic Rays
While a significant fraction of silicate dust in stellar winds has a crystalline structure, in the interstellar medium nearly all of it is amorphous. One possible explanation for this observation is the amorphization of crystalline silicates by relatively ‘‘low’’ energy, heavy-ion cosmic rays. Here we present the results of multiple laboratory experiments showing that single-crystal synthetic f...
متن کاملScattering by Interstellar Dust Grains . II . X - Rays
Scattering and absorption of X-rays by interstellar dust is calculated for a model consisting of carbonaceous grains and amorphous silicate grains. The calculations employ realistic dielectric functions with structure near X-ray absorption edges, with resulting features in absorption, scattering, and extinction. Differential scattering cross sections are calculated for energies between 0.3 and ...
متن کاملInterstellar Dust Grains
This review surveys the observed properties of interstellar dust grains: the wavelength-dependent extinction of starlight, including absorption features, from UV to infrared; optical luminescence; infrared emission; microwave emission; optical, UV, and X-ray scattering by dust; and polarization of starlight and of infrared emission. The relationship between presolar grains in meteorites and the...
متن کاملInterstellar Extinction by Spheroidal Dust Grains
Observations of interstellar extinction and polarization indicate that the interstellar medium consists of aligned non-spherical dust grains which show variation in the interstellar extinction curve for wavelengths ranging from NIR to UV. To model the extinction and polarization, one cannot use the conventional Mie theory which assumes the grains as solid spheres. We have used a T-matrix based ...
